The power of ‘listening in’ to the body and how this connects with our desires and core values.
When we listen in to our heart, we may be able to sense an inner knowing that resides there.
This is something we do inherently as children, and we often forget as we grow up how to tap into this skill.
In fact, our bodies are always signalling information about how we feel about the things we are doing, the interactions we are having with our environment, and the people around us.
But we don’t necessarily listen to these signals. Imagine you are talking with someone who is being rude to you, but the outcome of the conversation is worth a lot of money. It’s not helpful, our rational mind may assert, to stop this interaction because the outcome is important, and so we might choose to over-ride this voice inside of us. We ignore the rudeness we sensed in the other person, and we make the sale.
When this happens repeatedly we are creating a habit of not listening to ourselves, not listening to our inner truth. This habit will impact our lives and the ways in which we show up in the world. We might do this one hundred times a day, ‘its just normal’, and then wonder why we have pain in our shoulders or tightness in our throat. What if our actions could align with our values, and we establish healthy boundries in alignment with our business growth.
Listening in
One of the powerful blessings of our yoga practice is that of ‘listening in’ to our bodies. This might sound strange, but it is a simple and profound practice that we can work with on our mat, and at our desks, and it ripples out into our day to day lives.
Through ‘listening in’, we learn to respond, take care, and regulate our own nervous systems. With practice and repetition, we can become better at this, and get clearer on what is truely important to us. We begin to discover what we need in this moment to find balance, to foster our wellbeing.
You might take a pause right now, close your eyes and ask yourself ‘what is truely important in this moment?’ and notice what comes up for you.
With our yoga practice we can take this listening in to another level, and begin to invite positive affirmations and intentions into our lives, in an embodied sense, using the breath and yoga asana, so that we begin to shape our experience in connection with our heart’s desires. This is powerful, and this is what I teach inside my membership Rebalanced & Thriving.
What are your desires, and how do they relate to your core values?
As creative leaders and entrepreneurs, our core values shape the work we do. Our businesses can be seen as a reflection of ourselves. If there is disregulation in our nervous system this will be mirrored in the way we operate in our business. We need to find balance, but haven’t got the time, we have a business to run afterall. We fear that if we made our health a priority, if we dropped the hustle, our business would suffer.
But I would argue that in fact it is vital that we ‘listen in’ to our bodies and notice, with kind curiosity, what comes up. We can begin to tend and befriend our nervous systems from a space of compassion and care. This is the foundation of the heart-centered approach to business, creativity and leadership that is desperately needed in the world at this time. This is the new way to operate, from a space of kind awareness that includes the planet and all beings including ourselves.
‘But it’s painful to listen in to my body’ OR ‘But I don’t have time’
These comments comes up all the time. And they are so valuable.
I am here to guide you in this work, and teach you in a step-by-step process that I have been sharing with others for years in my work as a teacher and coach. We create space around these feeling of resistence, with the gentle practices I teach. With time, this will empower you and build resilience in the nervous system that directly influences the health and resiliency of your life’s work and business.
I believe this work is too important to push aside, and I am here to guide the way.
But this isn’t for everyone. There is no quick-fix, and you do need to show up for yourself for short practices, even when you don’t feel like it, even when resistance comes up. Yes, we have all been there.
By listening in to the body, by learning how to come back into a state of nervous system regulation, we can get in touch with our core values, from a place of vitality and ease.
What this looks like for me, in my business
These values, which are ever-evolving, for me, look like this list, which comes directly from my ‘listening in’ practice.
Compassion – I meet people where they are with understanding and empathy, supporting them in their journey without judgment. I practice compassion for myself.
Authenticity – I create a safe space where people can be themselves, encouraging openness and honesty as part of healing and growth. I show up with authenticity rooted in self-care.
Nurturing Support – I provide consistent care and guidance, fostering a warm and supportive environment where everyone feels cared for. I nurture myself.
Holistic Well-being – I prioritise the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—ensuring that personal wellness is highly valued, and becomes the insight that guides our lives. My own practice supports the health I need so that I can show up for others.
Connection – I build strong, genuine relationships with those I serve, creating a supportive community of women who uplift one other. I connect with my inner voice, my inner guidance.
Empowerment – I help others reclaim their energy and creativity, guiding them to make empowered decisions that honor both their well-being and their goals. My creativity flows when I practice self-care.
Balance – I champion balance in all aspects of life, showing others how to lead their businesses and live their lives with harmony and ease. I create ease on purpose when I nourish myself.
I encourage you to have a go at listing your own core values.
